Since the very beginning, one of the goals of our association has been to offer support to musicians from the island. Amongst other things, our intention is to have a local musician in the Festival programme whenever possible. Some of them have included pianist Suso González, who played in 2002, and guitarist Pere Arguimbau, who took part in the 2006 Festival.
However, it is in Jazz al Carrer that the presence of Menorcan musicians has been most outstanding. Not in vain, this is one of the main reasons why we organize this complimentary activity to the Festival. Pere Arguimbau and Suso González themselves have performed in Jazz al Carrer, as well as Jacob Arguimbau, Marcel Janer and bands such as Grup de Jazz del Casino de Sant Climent, Guiem Pons Trio, Agrofunk, Hoochie Coochie Band, Baraka and Agrupació Musical de Ciutadella. Another example of the support given to Menorcan artists was the concert cycle Quatre Fosquets amb Jazz, which took place in the summer of 2002. It was a collaborative project of the Associació de Músics Independents de Ciutadella (Independent Musicians Association of Ciutadella) and Jazz Obert, and its aim was to show the main characteristics and evolution of the different styles that could be included in what we call improvised music; the chronological development, with music and composers from the 17th century up to today; and the aesthetical development. Thus, each of the concerts focused on a particular characteristic within the general idea of the cycle. If this was the theatrical setting, the actors were renowned Menorcan musicians, most of whom teach at Ciutadella’s local music school (Escola Municipal de Música de Ciutadella).
